Phalaenopsis Orchid and Poinsettia Houseplants Watered Using Osmogro®
Water-sensitive plants like Poinsettia can be kept happy, healthy and attractive all the year round. The poinsettia plant was originally native to Central America, producing the characteristic, attractive red bracts during the short days of winter. Commercially grown poinsettia houseplants are now cultivated with a variety of different coloured bracts. However, red remains the most popular colour, especially at Christmas time. The growth of new coloured bracts can be achieved each year by keeping the plants in complete darkness for about 12 - 14 hours during the autumn (fall). This can be done by covering the plant with a paper bag, which allows the poinsettias to breathe. Remember: Poinsettias are not just for Christmas!
The exotic and attractive Phalaenopsis orchids are commonly referred to as "Moth Orchids". Phalaenopsis are generally considered to be the easiest houseplant orchid to care for. Phalaenopsis enjoy normal indoor temperature and lighting conditions but direct sunlight should be avoided. The growing medium should be continually moist just below the surface. Phalaenopsis require moist air, typically 55% - 75% humidity, and the open Osmogro® reservoir is ideal for achieving this. The growing medium should be relatively coarse (e.g. a medium grade wood bark), with plenty of free volume to allow a moist, breathable environment for the roots. With care, Phalaenopsis orchids will thrive on the Osmogro® house plant self-watering system.
